What is TASK?
History of the
Organization
TASK (Taking Action
for Special Kids) is an independent non-profit 501(c)(3) agency
serving the special needs population of Tazewell and surrounding
counties for over 25 years. We were originally founded as a chapter
of the Association for Retarded Citizens in the early 1970’s when
the first laws were passed mandating the education of handicapped
children in public schools. TASK was founded by a group of parents,
educators and community members to help families understand the
complexities of these new mandates.
Funding
TASK is governed by a
volunteer board of directors that meets bi-monthly. The agency is
funded by the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors, United Way of
the Virginias, grants, donations, and Tazewell County Public
Schools.
Mission
TASK assists families
of special needs children who need information on how to ensure that
their child receives what the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act of 2004 mandates: “a free
appropriate public education designed to meet their unique needs and
prepare them for further education, employment and independent
living.”
